Here's my problem. I really want to take the boys up to Marietta, Ohio, tomorrow so we can tour the World War II troop ship LST-325. The down side is that the city's Sternwheel Festival is going on. I'm not crazy about going to festivals in cities that I'm not familiar with. There's the parking, vendors, crowds, finding your way around, traffic, noise and such. I just want to go see the ship and leave.

Perhaps if we get there early enough, we can avoid a lot of the other stuff.

We'll see.

I suffered the same thing here in Pittsburgh. They were docked by the stadiums and there was a rib festival, Steeler 5K run, blaw...blaw all stuff that I avoid like the plague. I hate driving in Pittsburgh. The desire to see that ship verses my fear of crowds and Pittsburgh had me in a sweat drenched tizzy for days. My wife and I went early in the morning on Saturday Sept 4 and had no trouble other than getting caught on the wrong side of the road as the throng of runners went by.

Someone told me that the LST would still be in Marietta for a day or so after the stern wheel festival. You may want to check that out.

All I can say is go if you can. It was for me one of the best things I have done in years. I love that ship! If you go, show up first thing in the morning, we walked right on board. I talked to several people while chasing the boat that had waited hours to get on later in the day.

You can read about my love affair with LSTs and touring and chasing the 325 at my blog here:

BTW I quoted your newspaper article in one of my blog entries, the gentleman from Ohio talking about being on the 325 heading to Normandy.

I am a fellow river rat, albeit not to the degree you are. I sniff around the Allegheny River. I love rivers, river boats, dams & locks. LST 325 was one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

I am glad to see that I am not the only person in the world that avoids crowds and festivals!
