Links

I'm adding new links to the blog. It will take a few days to get them all up, but I'm tracking down as many links as I can to put over there. So if you now of any that would be good to include, send them my way. I prefer links related to the river, of course.

Here's a link for a Live Ships Map, customized to show the Ohio River from about Marietta to Cincinnati. This includes Huntington, but it looks like there may be a gap in coverage in the immediate Huntington area.

Live Ships Map, Marietta to Cincinnati

The Live Ships Map URL can be customized for any location:

centerx=longitude
centery=latitude
zoom=zoom level

The map boundaries will vary depending on monitor resolution; my monitor is 1680x1050.

I can't seem to get it to work, but I'll keep trying.

When I click on the link, I go to the map, so I don't know why it doesn't work for you.

Here are some media stories about towboating, mostly on the Mississippi River:

Life on a Towboat (from Minnesota Public Radio) story and
slide show

Mississippi Drifting (from Riverfront Times)

Piloting 1,000 feet of barges (from MSNBC)

Slide shows in this article require Adobe Flash player. If they don't appear within the article, try opening them in separate windows:
First
and
second double-cut lockage slide shows.

Three-part story on towboating from Christian Science Monitor:

Part One
,

Part Two
and

Part Three

The rhythm of river life (from Southeast Missourian)

I just discovered that the "Live Ships Map, Marietta to Cincinnati" link works with Firefox and Opera, but not with Internet Explorer. With IE, the page loads but there is a gray rectangle where the map should be. Not sure why.
