My grandfather, Col. Harry Pockras, was District Engineer for the Corps of Engineers in Huntington during much of WW2. Earlier, he had been the Corps' civilian Chief Engineer. He was the head of the design team for the dam and the old 1937 locks.
I'm looking for the dedication date / picnic held on completion of the 1937 Gallipolis Dam. My grandfather, Marvin Edwin Goff, worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers through the Civil Service, as one of the photographers for the dam project. My mother remembers a big event / picnic held for the families of all the workers on the dam project, but she doesn't remember the date. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Is there somewhere I can get more information on what the picnic/celebration/dedication included?
My mother Carolyn remembers the picnic, but not many details - except that her little brother got sick with so much rich, strange food, like hot dogs and soda pop ;-) She would have been almost 4 years old and her tag-along brother almost 2.
My mom seems to remember military planes flying and parachutists. The US wasn't in WWII yet, but it was sending ships and supplies to England at the time, so it's possible, I guess. My mom is almost 90 now, and sometimes old memories get mixed up. I'm trying to clarify and write stories about some of these things for family history.
Any help or direction you can supply would be greatly appreciated!
I love the Ohio River. I enjoy reading about the river, smelling the river, photographing the river, listening to its sounds ... and we can share them here.
