New or unnoticed?

The other day, while we were driving up the road along the Ohio River, Adam and I saw some big white birds sitting in a dead tree. We guessed they were egrets or white cranes. They were too far away. This place we saw them in the Greenup pool was the second along the river where we had spotted them. There's a place in the R.C. Byrd pool where we've seen them the past couple of years. My camera lens can barely get a decent shot, and we've never had the binoculars with us (we need to carry them, too, I guess).

Now I need to find out if these birds have been here for decades without my noticing them or if they -- and blue herons and other critters I've noticed in the past few years -- are making a comeback.

I have noticed the white egrets near the mouth of the Scioto River for several years now.I spotted one last weekend while fishing near the lower twin creek bar on the Ohio,so they are around for sure.

That's funny you post this. I saw some kind of large white bird on a stump in the backwater between Worthington & Russell, KY by the CSX yard just last week. My first thought was it's a blue heron which I see there fairly often. But I remember thinking at the time as I drove past that it seemed to be more white than blue.

I'll definitely slow down and take a closer look the next time.

According to Zane Grey, Myeerah of the Wyandotte was called "The White Crane."
