Winter rise

Thanks to C.R. Neale for the reminder ...

I was planning a mid-afternoon visit to the Ohio River here at Huntington WV to see what's going on with the river, as some of the tributaries are getting kind of high. According to the forecast, we can expect a 12-foot rise in the next 48 hours, followed by a quick fall.

What can I say? It's winter. This is how the river acts in winter.

/When I saw the Buckeye State going up the river at normal pool last weekend, there was hardly any wake behind those props. If we see it going upstream this weekend, I'm guessing the water will be churning harder.

I seen the Buckeye State pass Manchester yesterday, she was at slow idle and making at least 7mph down stream. No prop wash at all.A fine towboat. I wish I had that kind of equipment when I was working.

I saw just the opposite yesterday afternoon. An Ingram boat (sorry, didn't catch the nameplate) was going up at Worthington, KY city park with 6 or 8 empties and was pushing hard against the current. Not a rooster tail but there was definitely some prop wash. It was moving slow.

I went on to Lowes in Russell, KY, spent maybe 15 minutes there and then headed back home (down river) and that boat was just clearing the Ironton-Russell bridge. Normally it should have been well past that point.
